How to Start the Shores of Gold

The Shores of Gold is actually the ninth Tall Tale in the wide Shores of Gold Tall Tale story. You cannot start this specific tale until you complete The Revenge of the Morningstar.

To begin the Shores of Gold, head to Morrow's Peak Outpost in Devil's Roar, which is one of the game's newer sailing sections on the map. There's a good chance you've not visited an island in the Devil's Roar before, especially if you jumped into the game for the first time and got right to work on the Shores of Gold Tall Tales.

We're heading to Morrow's Peak Outpost because at the end of The Revenge of the Morningstar, Sandra the dock master at Dagger Tooth Outpost told us to visit someone named Grace on Morrow's Peak Outpost.

Head to the pub on Morrow's Peak Outpost and you should see Grace just outside. She wears dark-color gear, although it has bright, glowing orange accents on it. Next to her is the Tall Tale journal for the Shores of Gold Tall Tale.

Vote to play it and listen to what Grace has to say about her ventures with the Shroudbreaker.

After this, it's time to head to the Shores of Gold...finally!

How to Get to the Shores of Gold

With the feature-complete Shroudbreaker in tow, you can actually head to the Shores of Gold, matey! Head to Tribute Peak beyond the Shores of Gold — it's located in map quadrant on Y3!

Once here, your objective will be to find four Vault Medallions. Savvy? Let's do that now.

Where to Find the Four Vault Medallions

If you look in your journal, you'll find a map of the massive island you're on and four circles. Each of these circles is a vault puzzle to solve. Each vault puzzle has a marking in the circle associated with it: Kraken, Human, Ship, and Shark.

Here's how to solve each:

How to Solve the Kraken Vault Puzzle

When you arrive to the Kraken Vault on the Northern part of the island, head inside.

It's a cave on the southern side of the large rock found to the North.

Once inside, you'll find that the cave is riddled with wooden spikes that pop in and out of the ground. Avoid these as they will instantly kill you.

This is one of the easier vault puzzles to solve on this island. Behind the spikes (pay attention to the pattern that the spikes follow to avoid them), you'll see a pillar with a square that rotates. On this square are teal, glowing symbols. You need to match all pillars to show the same symbol.

There's only one symbol that can be found on each of the pillars in this room and what that symbol is changes every time you do this Tall Tale, so you'll need to rotate each of them all the way around and keep track of what symbols each pillar has.

Repeat this rotation twice to reveal the door hiding this vault's Vault Medallion. Grab it and bring it back to your ship.

How to Solve the Human Vault Puzzle

When you arrive to the Human Vault on the Eastern part of the island, you should see a table in the center of the room, and, up on the wall ahead, a picture of a key.

advertisem*nt

You're going to be rotating the pillars in here to match the key on the wall.

Each of the pillars will feature a piece of the key's shape. You need to rotate all of the pillars to essentially "build" the art of the key. The key will be pointing down and in a vertical position. You need to rotate the blocks to form the key either going from left to right or right to left, so be sure to take into the account the fact that the picture on the wall is vertical and not horizontal.

After doing this, press the button on the table here to lower a door. Behind it is the Vault Medallion you need from this vault. Grab it and bring it back to your ship.

How to Solve the Ship Vault Puzzle

The Ship Vault Puzzle is arguably the hardest, or at least, the most time consuming. That's because you'll be traveling all around the island for it. When you arrive to the vault on the Western side of the island, you'll find a table in the center. Shine a light on it and you'll see four circles on a map of the island — notice that each of the circles has a different number of dots in it, going from one to four.

The single dot circle corresponds to the pillar the farthest left inside this vault. You must travel to the single dot circle and find either a lever to pull, a plate to step on, some statues to interact with, or a rock brazier to interact with.

Doing so will unveil a single symbol. That's the symbol you must rotate the pillar to back in the vault. Here's what the sequence of symbols will be: Kraken, Shark, Turtle, and the Flame, from left to right.

advertisem*nt

After doing this, the Vault Medallion will be revealed. Grab it and bring it back to the ship.

How to Solve the Shark Vault Puzzle

When you arrive to the Shark Vault on the Southern part of the island, you'll find a large table. Light each of its braziers with your lantern (raise it up with LT and press Triangle to light each brazier) to begin the puzzle. The exit will close and you're stuck in here until you solve it or die...but you're using this guide, so you're set — no death awaits you. Savvy?

The pillars in here must be rotated so that you can see the teal symbol markings on them. Each of the circles in the journal has four symbols in them.

There are three circles so you'll need to solve this puzzle three times, one for each circle. Basically, look at the first pillar and see what symbol in its rotation it has that matches one of the symbols in the first circle. That symbol must be unique to the pillar so if you choose bear because bear is one of the symbols in the circle, you must make sure the other pillars don't have a bear.

advertisem*nt

Once you've determined that one of the symbols in the journal circle can only be found on the first pillar, move onto the second and repeat this process. Do this for all three pillars and do this for all three circles. After successfully doing this three times, the puzzle will be over and the medallion will be revealed.

Grab it and bring it back to our ship.

What to Do With the Vault Medallions

Once you've acquired all four Vault Medallions, bring them to the Compass Vault, which is marked on island map in your journal. To get there, you'll need to look for the wooden bridge strung between the largest peak on the island and another peak on the northern side. You can see it below:

Face the bridge and do a 180.

You need to follow this path you're now facing up and around to the left. When you see a piece of the large peak with yellow flowers, follow that path and you'll pass under a broken mast.

Eventually, you'll start climbing up until you reach the wooden bridge from earlier.

Head down it and follow the path to the left when it makes a fork. Continue forward until you see what we see below:

Head in here and place the four medallions into the diamond-shaped formation on the wall.

If you're playing alone, this part is not going to be fun because you'll have to bring all four medallions to the Compass Vault individually. Alternatively, you could bring each medallion here after finding them, one by one.

Once all four medallions have been placed into the Compass Vault formation, a door will fall down and behind it, you'll find the Gold Hoarder's Coin. It looks like a vault medallion with a key on it.

What to Do With the Gold Hoarder's Coin

Head to the Northwest side of the island and you'll discover some large, decrepit statues. One of them is clearly beheaded and its our entrance into the Gold Hoarder's vault below. If you read your Tall Tale journal, you'll learn that there's a door inside that must be unlocked.

To reach the inside, you need to get to the top of the beheaded statue. The easiest way to get on top is by shooting yourself out of your ship's cannon onto the top, although craftier players will likely find another way to reach the top. It's the large, stone statue on the left, closest to us int eh screenshot below:

On top, drop down and you'll be in a new room.

In here, look for a lever on the wall and pull it. This opens a door. Now, go back and grab the Gold Hoarder's Coin.

With the Gold Hoarder's Coin in hand, head down into the vault and place the coin into the designated circle (on the wall) to continue.

Up ahead along the path, you'll find a ton of traps to avoid and enemies to defeat.

First up is a large spiraling staircase with gaps in it. As you make your way down, jump over the gaps. If you fall, there's a good chance you'll fall in a pit of spikes that will insta-kill.

After this, you'll be in a room that looks like this:

Take a left and head down the tunnel-like path.

advertisem*nt

You'll see spikes coming out of the walls — obviously you should avoid those. Continue down this path, making sure to avoid the spikes along the way until you reach the end. You'll see a wooden bridge here — cross it.

On the other end, you'll see some precious pieces of wood making a very slim path.

Get your lantern out and proceed forward across the pieces of wood, making sure not to fall to your death below. Continue around until you reach here:

Here, look right and you'll see a wheel. Spin it all the way (it will take a while to do this) and then continue along the broken ship masts up ahead. Be very careful jumping from ship mast to ship mast.

At the end, you'll see this tunnel pictured below:

Head forward and time your jump over the spikes in such a way that the falling pieces of wood don't hit you. Continue along the path until you see some skeletons appear. Take all of them out and then spin the wheel at the bottom of this path to open the door next to it. The door doesn't shut immediately so if you try to just run past the skeletons, you can totally do so — just open the door enough for you to sprint under it to safety.

After this, you'll be in a tunnel of axes swinging from left to right and right to left.

advertisem*nt

The trick is to run along the left wall the second the first axe falls. Run right after that first axe falls all the way to the other side, all while hugging the left wall, and you'll make it to the other side.

In this next room, you'll be in a circular arena. You must defeat all waves of enemies before you can open the door with the wheel. You'll know you're on the last wave because a Skeleton Captain will appear.

In the next room, you'll need to pull three levers on the walls to proceed. There's one on the left, right when you walk in, another to the right of the door, and one straight ahead when you walk in, by the wooden scaffolding. The trick here is that the wooden planks of wood on the floor activate deadly traps so you must pull all three levers without stepping on these wooden planks.

Head through the door after pulling all three levers. Follow the path now before you all the way to a wooden bridge that's been lifted up into the air. Rotate the wheel next to it to lower the bridge — cross it.

Prepare for a fight because this next room is a fight against the Gold Hoarder.

How to Beat the Gold Hoarder

The Gold Hoarder is surprisingly probably the easiest boss fight in the entire Shores of Gold quest line, at least compared to Captain Briggsy and Lord Graymarrow.

You'll be attacking the Gold Hoarder as you would any enemy: throwable, your sword, and your pistol. That's the easy part, though. The hard part is staying alive.

advertisem*nt

Here's what you ned to look out for, beyond the Gold Hoarder's standard sword and gun attacks:

  • Teleportation: Throughout the fight, especially when you gang up on him with attacks, the Gold Hoarder will teleport to a different part of the room. When this happens, look around for their name in red, floating in the air. You can attack them by attacking where this name is, even if they haven't actually popped in yet.
  • Resurrection: For the duration of the fight, the Gold Hoarder will resurrect skeleton enemies. They're standard enemies so either ignore them or, if too many are building up, attack them. Keep some of these in between you and the Gold Hoarder as when they shoot at you, the bullets will likely hit the skeletons and not you.
  • Ground Pound: If you see the Gold Hoarder jump up into the air, they're about to do a massive ground pound. It does AOE damage so when you see them rise up, run away to avoid taking any of this move's damage.

After taking out the Gold Hoarder, they'll drop the Gold Hoarder's Skull. Take this back to an Order of Souls tent to earn 10,000 Gold.

Congrats! You've completed the Shores of Gold Tall Tale and the entirety of the Shores of Gold Tall Tale quest line. That's not the end of your story, though, matey — let's tackle the next Tall Tale in the game: The Seabound Soul.
